The official presentation of the 2024 Gañafote Cup at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid was a resounding success in terms of attendance and institutional participation. With the Huelva province exhibition hall packed to capacity, the sports tournament—which will take place March 21–24 in the province—has established itself as a world-class sports destination.
Joaquín Rasco, the general director of the Gañafote Cup, thanked the institutions for their support of this event, which will bring more than 25,000 people to Huelva. “This is a tournament for everyone, which encourages us to move forward with more determination than ever, after eight years of existence.”
A total of 400 teams will compete in two phases—in March and June—with teams from four continents and the world’s best teams gathering in the province of Huelva. To show his support for the tournament, David Villa, world champion and member of the Spanish national soccer team, visited the Huelva booth.
Huelva Mayor Pilar Miranda, speaking on behalf of all the host municipalities, said: “We are witnessing a major event that the Gañafote team has managed to put together.” “This is the model to follow in tourism, an area where Huelva is really excelling,” she noted. “Sports must become a major asset for tourism in the capital,” she concluded.
The president of the Huelva Provincial Council, David Toscano, emphasized that “events like this enrich our province,” and the regional delegate of the Huelva Regional Government, José Correa, noted that “thanks to projects like La Gañafote, the Huelva brand is strengthened around the world, which is the Regional Government’s goal.”
David Villa is the official face of the Gañafote tournament, having served as the patron of the seventh edition last year. The Discovery Tournament features four age divisions: pre-benjamín, benjamín, alevín, and infantil, along with the girls’ division. And in June, a second Gañafote Cup will be held for older age divisions, including the juveniles, who will be participating in this global tournament in Huelva for the first time.
