The city of Palos de la Frontera is a Spanish municipality located in the province of Huelva. In 2020 it had 11,742 inhabitants and a population density of 203.92 inhabitants/km. The economy of the town traditionally depended on the work of the sea, both fishing and trade. But due to emigration to the American lands and neighboring towns, the fishing and commercial fleet was disappearing, so that the municipality left the sea aside and was devoted to agricultural and livestock work.
On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his small fleet left the port of Palos de la Frontera on their way to adventure, leaving this place in the province of Huelva in a glorious place in the pages of history. With the Genoese admiral were two sons of Palos, Martin and Vicente Alonso, the Pinzon brothers. Palos de la Frontera and Columbus are synonymous with the conquest of a new continent.
If any place is worth visiting in Palos de la Frontera, without a doubt, it is the Museum of the Caravels. It has a seafaring significance, because from this place departed the ships for the discovery of America.
WHAT TO SEE IN PALOS DE LA FRONTERA
The jewel of the site are the replicas of the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, built in 1992 to celebrate the conquest of the New World.
The House-Museum of Martín Alonso Pinzón is also a must-see. In the Mudejar church of San Jorge (15th century), Columbus heard mass before embarking. It has been declared a National Monument, as has La Fontanilla, a fountain covered by a Mudejar pavilion, the place where Columbus got water for his long adventure.
In front of the church of San Jorge there is a monolith where the names of the 60 sailors from Palos (among them the Pinzón brothers) who participated in the discovery of America are engraved.
In the surroundings of the Andalusian town are located the lagoons of Palos and Las Madres, the estuary of the Tinto and Odiel rivers, Mazagon, a tourist town with beautiful beaches and dunes, a system that connects with the marshes of the Guadalquivir and the Doñana Park.
