Cartaya is a Spanish town and municipality in the province of Huelva (autonomous community of Andalusia). In 2020 it had 20,083 inhabitants according to the INE.1 Its surface area is 226.4 km² and has a population density of 84.12 inhabitants/km².
Cartaya was founded as an urban center by the Marquis of Gibraleón, D. Pedro de Zúñiga, in the estuary of the river Piedras. Its name comes from the Phoenician word "carteia" which means city, so presumably its settlement, although not continuous, is older.
It is also documented the existence of population centers in the surrounding villages in the High Middle Ages that prove that this area has been inhabited since ancient times.
The 4 km of beach (El Rompido, Playa de San Miguel, Playa de Nuevo Portil, and the westernmost part of El Portil, an atypical urban image due to the segregation of Punta Umbria), as well as the old Convent of the Holy Trinity, the Parish Church, the chapel of Santa Maria de Consolación and the Castle of the Zúñiga.
